Military Children in the Southern New Jersey Area Need Volunteer Tutors Over two million military children have had one or both parents deployed since 2011.  The average military family moves three times more often than its civilian counterpart, according to the Department of Defense. This transiency often disrupts a military family child’s friendships, academic progress, and sense of connectedness. Military children in Southern New Jersey need you.  Will you answer their call for duty? Terry Dougherty says the heroism of her students is what called her to duty. Dougherty is a third-grade teacher at Roland Rogers Elementary School in Galloway Township, New Jersey, and the winner of the 2011 Great American Teach-Off, sponsored by University of Phoenix and GOOD Education. Dougherty’s duty isn’t in risking her life for her country, but rather giving her time to help restore balance in the lives of military children, who oftentimes go unnoticed or quietly struggle in school because of frequent moves. Dougherty, the wife of a retired 30-year Coast Guardsman and the mother of two adult children, understands firsthand the issues children face when they are constantly uprooted. She sought a way to keep them from getting lost in the shuffle.  That’s why she came up with this program.  We’d very much like you to volunteer and help teach a Military Child.   G
